Small business owners are struggling to take any downtime to reflect on their business, according to a new study from Sage.

Nearly half (48%) of business owners admitted to regularly taking work home with them, which 39% said they have taken work with them on a family holiday. Over the summer, 43% spent at least one full weekend catching up on work, and 24% missed a family occasion to do so.

With the pressure of this extra workload, 64% of business owners said they feel worried or stressed about work when they are at home. To combat this, Sage has launched the Headspace mobile app to help encourage business owners to log the locations where they can think about their business, career and future goals.

Paul Cairney, from Sage UK and Ireland, said “Research suggests that having more time to think strategically outside the office significantly benefits business success and growth. However, more than a quarter (28%) we’ve spoken to said that finding ‘Headspace’ was impossible in their working lives, because they get bogged down and consumed by administrative tasks.”

The study also looked into the places business owners find their ‘Headspace’, with 29% reporting they find it at home, 26% on their commute to work, 11% while exercising, and 10% while walking the dog.
