News: Sacked HMV employees take over Twitter feed

Oh dear – here’s a lesson for all businesses out there with a social media presence: be careful who you trust with your online accounts.

Struggling retailer HMV yesterday suffered an embarrassing PR disaster when an employee took to the company’s official Twitter stream to announce redundancies.

The hashtag #hmvXFactorFiring took off on Twitter after a disgruntled employee posted ‘We’re tweeting live from HR where we’re all being fired! Exciting!! #hmvXFactorFiring’

HMV tweets
The employee continued to keep followers updated during the mass layoffs, as senior staff frantically tried to freeze the Twitter account. One tweet read ‘just overheard our Marketing Director (he’s staying, folks) ask “How do I shut down Twitter?” #hmvXFactorFiring’

It was later revealed that HMV dismissed around 190 staff throughout their head offices yesterday.

For businesses everywhere, it’s a warning: don’t trust everyone with your social media accounts (or at least change the passwords before you sack them).
