Retailers in the UK are bracing themselves for the Christmas rush, as this coming Saturday (30th November) is expected to be the busiest day for sales this festive season.
In Royal Mail’s poll of 500 small and medium online retailers, 77% said the most intense competition comes from other online businesses rather than the High Street.
With competition so high, 44% of online retailers said they would be using price promotions to attract customers this Christmas. A further 27% will offer free delivery and 15% will offer free returns.
With so many retailers competing with special offers, 31% said their biggest challenge is keeping prices competitive while still retaining a profit.
The study also found that a third of small and medium online retailers in the UK have taken measures to enable people to buy from them using their smartphones.
Nick Landon, managing director of Royal Mail Parcels, said: “Christmas is the busiest time of year for Royal Mail and our customers. Our research shows UK SME online retailers have been planning extensively for the important Christmas period, responding to customer needs to ensure they win their share of sales.”
