Introduction to SEO
People and organisations are in love with search. There were more than one trillion unique URLs indexed worldwide in 2010, with individuals spending up to four hours per month using search engines. These figures are truly startling and serve to highlight the importance of effective SEO. The SEO sphere is laden with jargon and impenetrable acronyms, the table below provides a full explanation of the most used SEO terms:
| Adwords | Google's paid for adverts - shown at the top and right of a Google search. |
| Analytics | Google statistics about a websites usage - where visitors came from, what pages they visited, time spent on each page, what page they left on and where they went etc. |
| Blog | Short for web log; can refer to day to day news, company updates, knowledge sharing etc. |
| Crawl | Refers to search engine robots going from page to page on the web and saving/indexing the content. |
| Editorial Link | A link earned from a well known site with strong editorial guidelines. For example: BBC |
| Fresh Content | Refers to creating new content. This serves to tell search engine crawlers that your site is active. |
| Googlebot | Google software that crawls, reads and indexes web pages and looks for more links to follow. Other search engines use similar software typically referred to as ‘spiders’ or ‘crawlers’. |
| Landing Page | The page a visitor lands on having clicked on a specific link or advertisement. |
| Link Building | The process of linking to relevant, reputable sites and receiving links to your site from websites considered to be authoritative and relevant to your business. This process enables search engines to view your site as more authoritative, relevant and trustworthy. |
| No Follow | A message to search engines that a Hyperlink should not be trusted and not allowed to influence a search engine’s ranking of the Hyperlink’s target. |
| PageRank | An algorithm used to measure the importance of a page. Named after Google co-founder Larry Page |
| SEO Copywriting | Writing copy in a manner which helps the documents to appear relevant to a broad selection of relevant search terms. |
