It seems to be the season for Bank holidays, not just as we enter May in the UK, but in South Africa too! Today celebrates YOU. The worker, and we are certainly thankful for our employees in Cape Town and in the UK office alike.
The history of Workers’ Day dates back to the 1886 Haymarket Affair in Chicago. When police tried to disperse a large crowd of striking workers. (They were protesting for a shorter workday of eight hours). A bomb was thrown at the policemen by an unidentified assailant. Law officers then proceeded to shoot at a defenceless crowd of unarmed demonstrators.
This event led to annual demonstrations and on May 1st, 1891 the day was formally drafted into the calendars of over 80 countries. The Uk celebrates Workers Day on the 1st Monday of May each year, and South Africa, like most countries, celebrate it today on the 1st of the month. South Africa first celebrated Workers Day in 1994 following the first democratic elections in the country, known as Freedom Day.
May Day is now most commonly associated as a commemoration of the achievements of labourers. So I think it’s fitting today to highlight the achievements of all our employees at bOnline all of who are working hard day in and day out. Thank you to all! It is also a great time to reflect on all the workers that help you in everyday life and thank them too!
