The 'Big Four' providers - BT, Sky, Virgin Media and TalkTalk - have once again been delayed in implementing the new One Touch Switching service. The deadline of the 14th March was missed, which is the second time it's happened.
What is the One Touch Switching service?
During late 2021, Ofcom revealed its intention to bring in new “One Touch Switch” rules for telecom companies. These rules would mean broadband and landline providers need to offer residential customers a simplified process if they want to change suppliers.
Ofcom’s research has shown that many users (41%) are put off switching due to the hassle of contacting more than one supplier. A similar number (43%) think it will take too long.
One Touch Switch is designed to change that, giving customers a clearer and more consistent experience, regardless of which network providers they are switching to/from. In addition to taking away the existing Notification of Transfer process, One Touch Switch will be gaining-provider led (GPL), meaning the new supplier is responsible for making sure a switch happens efficiently when requested.
The missed deadline marks the second time the fresh switching system has been pushed back. Back when the plans were originally announced, Ofcom said that the 3rd April 2023 as the date customers could switch under the new rules. This was then moved to the 14th March 2024, however, that too has now been missed. The new deadline is expected to be the 12th September.
