The “Thousand Shades” of Being Neutral

Most sentiment models work on a three-point scale: Positive, Negative or Neutral. But the “Neutral” category is often where data goes to die because the AI couldn’t figure it out.

The hard part is telling the difference between Objective Neutrality (“The sky is blue”) and Bipolar Sentiment, which is when a text has equal amounts of strong positive and negative feelings. A review that says, “I loved the interface but hated the price,” is often averaged out to “Neutral” without “Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis” (ABSA). This hides the most useful information for a product team.

 

Multilingualism and Cultural Slang

Language changes as fast as the internet. Every day, new slang, emojis and “leetspeak” come out. Also, feelings depend on culture. In some cultures, it is normal to give high praise, while in others, saying “fine” or “satisfactory” is a strong recommendation.

AI models often have a hard time with code-switching, which is when a person uses more than one language in a single sentence (like Spanglish or Hinglish). In order to accurately capture sentiment in a globalised world in 2026, models need to be trained on informal, localised dialects, not just formal “textbook” language.

 

Handling Uncertainty and Subjectivity

In the end, feelings are personal.
